HOW TO WEAR PATTERNS

HOW TO WEAR PATTERNS Alexandra Wood

If you’re used to wearing classic colours and neutral tones, then branching out into patterns may sound a bit daunting.

We understand this and many of our clients start off wanting to stay in their comfort zone. You may feel patterns don’t suit you (we promise, everyone can pull off a pattern!) or you may not want to stand out in the crowd, but we’re going to debunk everything you might already think about patterns!

EXPERIMENT WITH SMALLER ITEMS FIRST

If a shirt feels like a step too far to begin with, then starting off with a smaller item can be a great way to add pattern to your outfit. The Alexandra Wood pocket square (pictured above) is a perfect way to dip your toes into the pool of patterns and can be the perfect complement to your favourite sports jacket. These patterns don’t have to be loud and when done well, new patterns and colours can just add a touch of something different to your look.

THEY DON’T HAVE TO BE ‘LOUD’

When you think of patterned garments, crazy colours may spring to mind, but this isn’t the only way to wear patterns. A subtle colour with a small pattern gets you well on your way to adding more into your wardrobe. Another shirt from our new collection which is a sophisticated introduction to pattern is the Limited edition English Garden shirt. The subtle colour and small print are great for smart casual occasions – you really can’t go wrong.

PATTERNS CAN GIVE YOU CONFIDENCE

Perhaps you’ve been stuck in a style rut and have been wanting to try something new but haven’t known where to start. Perhaps you’ve gotten into the habit of buying the same styles and colours over and over and want to break the mould. Jazzing up your wardrobe with patterns can be one of the best ways to refresh your look and give you new confidence. We all know that feeling when you put on something new, you instantly feel good about yourself. Try this but with something that’s a bit different to what you’re used to and we bet you’ll get compliments left, right and centre!

THEY’RE SURPRISINGLY EASY TO STYLE!

There are two types of patterned shirts you could try. The discreet patterned shirt, which could be easier to wear as it almost looks like a block colour shirt (like the two we’ve already mentioned), or a statement pattern shirt, where the whole outfit revolves around this piece. Both are great for different occasions and to pair with different items.

It’s never too late to try out a new style and step out of your comfort zone. Remember, if you’re going for a patterned shirt, you can keep it super simple with plain trousers and a jacket.
