What is Made to Measure Tailoring?

Made to measure is an upgrade from ready to wear, where you get to choose your own fabric, design and fit. We take up to 30 measurements & configurations to ensure the best fit for you and your shape. It’s something that takes skill and isn’t about simply handing someone a measuring tape.

On your first fitting, you can expect for your suit to be fully made as you would see with a ready to wear suit but created to your specific requirements. For more information on bespoke please read here. All of our made to measure options involve an appointment with one of our tailors at our Bishop’s Stortford or Savile Row showroom.

Made to Measure

You’ve decided that you want a made to measure suit made. (Great choice!) You may have decided that it’s time to invest in your wardrobe or want to look amazing, and that’s what we love to help you with.

We help you choose the exact colour, fabric, cut and style to enhance you in ways you may not have thought possible. We are different from other tailors in that we look at your skin tone, body shape, and personality to create you something unique to only you.

We offer you complete guidance and are bold enough to tell you (respectfully!) if we feel something won’t suit you and offer alternative suggestions. That said, this is ultimately your suit and your style.

“If there was a box for 6 stars, i’d tick it!”

Neil Cockrell, IBM

Want to know more? We run through some of the most important parts of your suit:

THE CUT

The cut is the single most important element of your suit. When done properly, it will balance your body by hiding your flaws and enhancing your attributes.

Here are a few pointers that we feel lead to a desirable looking suit.

The waistline –A slightly longer jacket allows you to create a nice curve into the waistline which flatters the body so much more than a straight cut jacket. Simply having a smaller waist than your chest isn’t enough to make a difference: the cut must be created in such a way that the waistline comes in at just the right point.

Back of the jacket –Your jacket should curve into your back and not ‘float’. This is a clear sign that you’ve had something made especially for you.
These are just some of the many elements of the cut that, while complicated to explain, are paid great attention to by a skilled tailor with a keen and knowledgeable eye.

THE CONSTRUCTION

It’s what’s inside that counts. That saying couldn’t be truer when it comes to made to measure suits where the inner workings play a significant role in their longevity. We use a number of more sophisticated elements in the construction of your made to measure suit to take it one step closer to the quality of a bespoke suit.

QUALITY FABRICS

You can’t have a suit made without using an amazing fabric. It’s the star of the suit and is something you should be proud of. If you short-change yourself with less expensive fabrics, then it will become visibly obvious when the suit looks stiff or starts to shine after only a short time.

We use the highest quality fabrics from only the best suppliers in England. The suit will cost more due to the quality of the fabric, but we believe that this is something you simply can’t compromise on.

The lining of the suit is where you can let a little creative magic happen by using contrasting colours or even vibrant prints. Viscose and satin fabrics tend to offer the best breathability and strength. We hold over 500 lining choices so you can choose something that perfectly matches your suit and your personal style.

THE COLOUR

Choosing the right colour (and variation of tone) for yourself isn’t easy to get right unless you’re particularly good friends with a stylist. For a suit to flatter you, all of the components must be just right – and the colour is an important element.

Colour can make a real difference to a man’s skin tone. We often like a colour from a distance, but when it is held against our face suddenly we look washed out and lack-lustre. The right colour has the complete opposite effect: it will lift your skin tone and make you look and feel fresh.

Our made to measure suits take between 6-8 weeks. However, we advise booking 3 months before if this is for a wedding.
