What is Made to Measure Tailoring?

Made to measure is an upgrade from ready to wear, where you get to choose your own fabric, design and fit. An affordable route tailoring any given suit to your unique build and leaving you looking and feeling better than ever.

Made to measure, while not entirely bespoke, is an aspect of suit tailoring that takes skill and expert judgement. It’s not about simply handing someone a measuring tape. Over the course of a relaxed, 45-minute appointment at our Bishop’s Stortford or Savile Row showroom one of our tailors will take up to 30 measurements and configurations to ensure your best fit and sharpest look.

On your first fitting, you can expect your suit to be fully made, as if ready to wear, but created to your specific requirements, still with further opportunities to nip and tuck.

The ‘Alexandra Wood’ difference

A made to measure suit is your wardrobe investment, whether it’s for a special occasion or your first tailored suit. One thing for sure is that you’ll feel a transformation of confidence and style.

Taking your skin tone, body shape, as well as personality into consideration, you will leave wearing the exact colour, fabric and cut to enhance your stance in ways you’d never have thought possible. Contemporary but timeless, which never detracts from the man you are.

You will never be blinded with science, and will find out what will suit you. At Alexandra Wood, what gets us out of bed in the morning is the prospect of making every man ‘more’.

“If there was a box for 6 stars, i’d tick it!”

Neil Cockrell, IBM

Want to know more? Here are the crucial building blocks on which Alexandra Wood prides itself:

CUT

The single most important element of your suit. When done properly, a tailored suit’s cut will balance your body by disguising any ‘irregularities’ and enhancing your attributes.

For example, a slightly longer jacket allows you to create a nice curve into the waistline which flatters the body so much more than a straight-cut jacket.

Then there’s the back of the jacket – it should curve into your spine and not ‘float’. A clear sign that you’ve had something made especially for you.

Just a couple of the many elements of cut that, in skilful concert, will have you walking taller than ever.

CONSTRUCT

“It’s what’s inside that counts.” Never truer than when it comes to made to measure suits, where the inner workings of your suit play a significant role in its longevity. We use a number of more sophisticated elements in the construction of your made-to-measure suit to take it one step closer to the quality of a bespoke suit.

FABRIC

At Alexandra Wood, the choice and quality of fabric comes first and foremost. Our swatch books are literally the first thing you browse, during your Savile Row or Bishop’s Stortford appointment. The cloth should be the star of the suit (after you, of course) and it should something to be proud of. If you short-change yourself with less-expensive fabrics, then it will become visibly obvious when the suit looks stiff or starts to shine.

We use the highest-quality fabrics from only the best suppliers in England. The suit will cost more due to the quality of the fabric, but we believe this is something you should never compromise.

The lining of the suit is where you can let a little creative magic happen, by using contrasting colours or even vibrant prints. Viscose and satin fabrics tend to offer the best breathability and strength. We hold over 500 lining choices so you can choose something that perfectly matches your suit and your personal style.

QUALITY FABRICS

You can’t have a suit made without using an amazing fabric. It’s the star of the suit and is something you should be proud of. If you short-change yourself with less expensive fabrics, then it will become visibly obvious when the suit looks stiff or starts to shine after only a short time.

COLOUR

For a suit to flatter, all of the components must be just right, and colour is one of the most important elements. Rather than being slavishly beholden to fashion or fad, Alexandra Wood recognises what a difference colour can make to a man’s skin tone, and styles accordingly.

We often like a colour from a distance, but when it is held against our face suddenly we look washed out and lack-lustre. The right colour should have the opposite effect: it can lift your skin tone and make you look and feel fresh.

Our made to measure suits take between 6-8 weeks. However, we advise booking 3 months before if this is for a wedding.
