Whether you’re only attending for the hottest parties of the year or are going for some serious Arty indulgence, our guide will ensure you’re dressed for this event in fine form.

What is Art Basel?

Art Basel is an international, luxury art fair showcased in early December and hosted in Basel, Switzerland, Florida and Singapore and was launched in 1970 by by Basel gallerists Ernst Beyeler, Trudl Bruckner and Balz Hilt, the event was originally designed to showcase the work of emerging contemporary artists by bringing together galleries, collectors and members of the public.

Art Basel is one of the most flamboyant events on the calendar, showcasing not only the world’s most incredible and new art but a wonderful, colourful mix of the artists and the guests themselves. This event is one of the most exciting annual events with over 4,000 artists and 269 leading international galleries held at The Miami convention centre, showcasing some of the greatest new works the contemporary art scene has to offer, ranging from modern masterpieces and incredible installations to rooftop parties and shopping to your heart’s content. There is something here for all tastes.

Abandon your clothing rule book for the day

Where the rule of the day is to dress with just as much creativity as the art work itself, there isn’t a set dress code. The event is filled to the brim with endless sponsored parties, with a guest list of the hottest people in the art world, so you’ll want to make sure you stand out and have an enviable wardrobe ready to take you from walking round for hours onto the parties….

So, on to how to dress for this wild occasion. This is art after all, so it makes sense that the more extreme the better. Etiquette can be safely thrown out the window and your inner Jackson Pollock can come out fully on display. From floral suits to leopard prints, you can truly go wild. Think floral shirts, bright suits, clashing accessories and every colour goes.

Fear not, if looking like an explosion in an art factory or looking like David bowie in his heyday fills you with dread – A classic sports jacket and trouser combination certainly won’t be frowned upon. A colourful tie or pocket square will show you’ve made efforts and are comfortable in your own, subtle skin.

First time to Art Basel? There are a vast number of art work on display, so you’ll want to make sure you have a plan. Take your business cards, laptop and comfortable shoes and you’re in business.
