When people think of bespoke tailoring, their minds often jump to traditional fabrics: luxurious wools, classic tweeds, and fine cottons. And while these materials are timeless, I believe tailoring has the potential to be so much more.
I love pushing the boundaries by incorporating unconventional fabrics—materials not typically associated with tailoring but that bring something fresh, functional, and unique to the table.
Here’s how I use these unexpected fabrics to craft standout pieces that go beyond the ordinary.
Reimagining the Classics
Take the classic raincoat, for example. A staple in any gentleman’s wardrobe, it’s traditionally made from gabardine or coated cotton. But I like to add a twist.
One of my favourite fabrics for raincoats is Ventile—a high-performance material originally developed for Spitfire pilots in World War II. Water-resistant, breathable, and exceptionally durable, Ventile offers both style and substance.
The result? A raincoat that looks effortlessly sharp while being practical enough to withstand the harshest weather.
Combining Aesthetics with Performance
Functionality should never come at the expense of style. By using innovative fabrics, I create garments that look sharp while performing beautifully in real-life situations.
For example:
- Technical Wool Blends – These retain the refined appearance of wool but are lighter, wrinkle-resistant, and offer stretch for added comfort—ideal for men who travel frequently.
- Cashmere-Linen Blends – Soft, breathable, and luxurious, these fabrics bring effortless elegance to summer tailoring without feeling heavy or rigid.
These unconventional choices ensure my clients move seamlessly through their day—whether presenting in a boardroom, attending an event, or travelling across the globe.
Exploring Unique Textures
Tailoring doesn’t have to mean flat, predictable finishes. Textured fabrics add depth and character to a garment, making it feel more personal and distinctive.
From soft suede for a contemporary take on a bomber jacket to lightweight herringbone patterns that reinterpret traditional styles, texture adds a tactile and visual interest that sets my designs apart.
Even small details—such as a contrasting fabric on a collar or pocket lining—can transform a garment into something truly one-of-a-kind.
Sustainability Meets Style
I’m also passionate about incorporating sustainable fabrics into my designs. Recycled wool blends and organic cottons not only look exceptional but also align with a growing desire for conscious consumption.
By choosing materials with a lower environmental impact, I help my clients invest in pieces that are timeless in both style and sustainability.
Unconventional Fabrics for the Modern Man
My clients aren’t looking for ordinary—they want pieces that reflect their individuality, ambition, and lifestyle. That’s why I use unconventional fabrics to offer:
- Raincoats with history and innovation (hello, Ventile!).
- Jackets and suits that fuse classic style with modern functionality.
- Wardrobes that combine comfort, performance, and sharp aesthetics.
It’s about more than just tailoring—it’s about designing garments that feel personal, distinctive, and crafted for the life you lead.
Why It Matters
Using unconventional fabrics isn’t just a creative choice—it’s a way to ensure that every piece I design is as unique as the client wearing it.
These fabrics tell a story of innovation, craftsmanship, and individuality. They elevate tailoring from tradition to something fresh, dynamic, and entirely bespoke.
