What to wear to the Goodwood revival 2021

3 minutes read

The Goodwood Revival is one of, if not the most stylish British three-day festival. Here we guide you to ensuring that your style is firmly in the driving seat.

What can you wear to the Goodwood Revival?

Held every September at Goodwood circuit since 1998, the Revival recreates the glamour of motor racing from the past, both on and off the historic track. It’s one of those rare days that allows you to step into your style time machine and enjoy the fashions of the 1940s through to the 60s while lusting over the eclectic mix of classic cars on display. If you are planning on attending in 2021, but you aren’t quite sure what to wear so that you don’t look like you’ve picked up a costume online, this guide is for you.

The first Goodwood festivals were held between 1948 and 1966. The Goodwood Revival (as the name suggests) pays homage to this golden era and explains the unique style requirements of the event. From silk cravats that wouldn’t look out of place on Frank Sinatra, to a checked suit or an old-fashioned leather biker jacket ala Marlon Brando, you’ll find guests dressed in garb from each of the three decades. A key staple which can never be denied is a fine fitting, bespoke tailored suit. The Goodwood website does offer style advice, but in theory, if it’s within the style of the era, then anything goes.

You’re not required to dress up (unless you qualify for central Paddock access, in which case a jacket and tie is necessary for all gentlemen), but it’s a lot of fun to be involved. So, let’s take a look at some tried and tested looks of yonder years that can inspire your Goodwood look.

Men’s wardrobe choices by era

We’ve taken a look at what to expect, sartorially speaking, of the Revival. To help you narrow down your wardrobe options, now we’ll look at each era and how you can interpret it, without hiring a naff costume.

The 1940s: war-time tailoring

From your Dad’s old army uniform to a set of badges on a classic navy, sports jacket, it’s quite fun to play around with this style. Another more comfortable option would be to opt for a heavyweight suit made from classic, 14-15oz worsted wool or a heavy, three-piece tweed suit. Add a wide tie, trilby, a dapper pocket square and a well-groomed visage, and you’ll be marching off to the Goodwood Revival with confidence.

The 1950s: the laid-back suit

This era was all about a classic suit in flannel or pinstripe with pleated trousers. Look at photographs of Frank Sinatra or Clark Gable for style inspiration. To keep the look authentic, accessorise with a spotted tie, striped shirt and a pocket watch for added elegance. Try a fedora hat for a chic finish to your attire.

The 1960s: rock and rollers

Pull together a roll neck jumper, a check jacket or snug-fitting suit in a cool blue and a pair of cool sunglasses, and you’re pretty much there with the mod look. The 1960s was the time to really make a statement, so if you’re opting for this era, don’t hold back. You could also go for a Marlon Brando-esque look with tight jeans, t-shirt and a leather jacket.

Your go-to accessories

If you’ve left your outfit to the last minute and but want to look like you’ve made every effort possible, use a couple of these accessories to add a pop of nostalgia to your chosen outfit:

  • A cravat
  • Striped shirt
  • Panama hat
  • Panel wool gatsby hat
  • Ulster coat

The Goodwood Revival is the perfect way to have fun, to enjoy nostalgia at its very best and see some of the finest motorcars ever made. Whether you decide to make a subtle nod to one of the eras or go all out on a historically accurate outfit, you’ll look best if you love the clothes and feel confident.
