Look Sharper Than James Bond With an AW Dinner Suit

BE BLACK TIE READY

You will no doubt receive several invitations to attend black tie balls and award ceremonies as a busy, successful man. Let Alexandra Wood design you an outstanding black tie that has James Bond swivelling in his Martini.

Rooms get hot, you get in a sweat but we can design you a sharp, stylish and practical tailored dinner suit to meet your needs and leave you looking hot, yet staying cool.

A tailored dinner suit is an investment. Unlike our business suits that are subject to the rough and tumble of everyday life, a dinner suit is there to be worn only on the most formal of occasions and it is important that not only does it fit you perfectly, but that it stands the test of time.

A tailored dinner jacket will make the stylish statement that you need it to. We help you side swerve any faux pas and help guide you to the best style choice; whether that be a midnight blue dinner suit or black.

BE BLACK TIE READY

If you don’t know your notch lapel to your shawl, we don’t judge, we simply guide you to what will suit you and your occasion best. There’s no one size fits all when it comes to a dinner suit.

A black dinner suit (or black tie) remains a timeless classic, where navy came and went. If you wish to be a little more dynamic, then you may prefer to choose a velvet, smoking jacket instead.

The main essential key points are that your black tie suit is comfortable yet flattering. We believe here at AW that there’s nothing hotter than a dinner suit (In a good way).

“Voted one of the best Savile Row Tailors 2024 “Looking for a bespoke suit exactly the way you want it? Since 2007, that has been Alexandra Wood’s mission” to find out what the customer wants, and build upon it. While respectful of Savile Row, Alexandra Wood prides itself on its open-mindedness.”

”He was easily the best-dressed man in the room (once dubbed “GQ Man” by the Guardian). Even with his plate overloaded from the buffet, Umunna was looking good. Partly it is the way he carries himself – calm, relaxed, supremely confident – but also it is those bespoke suits he wears from Alexandra Wood on Savile Row.” Tony Parsons, GQ

”Her bespoke pieces have been worn by politicians, actors and film directors, as well as being named ‘’Tailor of the 21st Century’’ by GQ. This success has been hard won and thanks to 13 years experience. Alexandra has plenty of wisdom to share on the art of navigating a male-dominated environment and finding success on your own terms.”

”Alexandra isn’t your usual tailor. For one, she’s a woman – one of the first on Savile Row, and still something of a rarity on the storied street. Driven by a desire to make the world of men’s tailoring more personal and less intimidating, Alexandra began her tailoring career in womenswear, Alexandra quickly found she had a hidden talent for mens tailoring.”

Dinner Suit FAQ‘s

A dinner suit, also known as a tuxedo or black tie attire, is a formal ensemble typically worn for evening events AKA black tie events and award ceremonies. Your invite will usually say ‘Black tie only’.

A dinner suit should be worn with a white, dinner shirt, black bow tie and dinner shoes (typically black patent) If ‘black tie’ only is stated you’ll want to adhere to these rules. Your invitation will otherwise state ‘Smart/Glam’ and variations thereof.

A dinner suit usually features satin or silk accents such as lapels, buttons, and a stripe down the trousers, distinguishing it from a regular suit.

Choose fabrics like wool, mohair, or velvet for a less traditional dinner suit, considering factors like breathability and texture. Mohair is ideal for a suit that won’t ever crease, whilst being breathable and light, it remains sharp all night long.

Although typically a formal, event suit worn for such occasions as black tie and award ceremonies, a dinner suit is often worn as a wedding suit.

A dinner suit is an investment well made. Given that it’s not as frequently worn as a business suit might be, it’s all the more reason to buy a really great one. A bespoke or made to measure suit will have much more seam allowance, which means if needed, it can be let out if necessary (or taken in of course).

The accessories for a dinner suit are almost as important as the suit itself. Everything must look polished, sharp and well put together. Here’s what’s needed:

  • An evening watch. It’s time to switch your Garmin or Apple watch.
  • Black studs for your dinner shirt if you’re choosing a studded option vs a concealed shirt.
  • Black, patent shoes.
  • Black satin bow tie; either pre-tied or self tie.
  • Plain black socks. Now’s not the time to get jazzy!
  • A great aftershave and hey voila – You’re off to the ball!

Take it to a reputable dry cleaners straight after your event, so that it’s ready for your next event. Only worn for a couple of hours? A simple spritz of Febreeze will brighten it up.

Always check your dinner suit at least a month before your event. The number of times I’ve seen clients be caught out it’s more common than you think. It’s either old and dated, doesn’t fit or hasn’t been cleaned since the last event.
