What to wear to Wimbledon and ace your style

What to wear to Wimbledon and ace your style Alexandra Wood

Wimbledon is the most prestigious, British tennis event on the sporting calendar, running for two weeks between the 29th June to the 12th July.

Whether you’re gracing the private members area or are simply a guest, we offer you advice on how to look your very best for this fine occasion. So you can sip on a cool glass of Pimms or Champagne, without worrying if you’ll be acing your style or not.

Where there is no official dress code,  there are some unspoken rules that should be adhered to. When speaking about what to wear, it’s sometimes good to address what not to wear. Firmly on the list are the following items – torn jeans, running vests, dirty sneakers, or sport shorts. (This is formally stated on their website.)

Wimbledon is one of the most sought after events in the British calendar, full of celebrities looking their best and so dressing up for the occasion is not only appropriate, it’s fun too.

OUR TOP TIPS

The two essential items we advise you don’t leave your house without is a panama hat and a pair of sunglasses. Equally, you may want to bring a small umbrella as some years there have been days of endless, glorious sunshine and others; downpours. Just what’s expected of the great British weather.

Members area

If you are a member or a guest of a member, this is the only area of Wimbledon that rules do apply. You must wear trousers, a shirt, jacket and a tie is compulsory. You don’t have to wear your tie while sitting in Centre court but once you’ve got to the entrance of the members lounge, it must be on.

Alternative guest areas

If you are a general guest, you have more freedom in what you can dress. Here is our guide to ensure you’re looking and feeling comfortable, but also making sure the tennis ball isn’t the only thing guests are turning their heads for…

The suit

From formal to a smart/casual cotton suit, the choice is yours. You could have some fun and choose a lightweight suit with a mix of linen, silk and cotton. The bonus here is that you will not only look great but you’ll feel cool all day long too.

If you prefer to opt for something more conservative, then you may want to choose a classic blue suit with an open necked shirt. Remember there’s no need to wear a tie unless you’re a member or guest of a member.

Separates

A firm favourite style for most Wimbledon attendees not wishing to rock the style boat are the separates. This comprises of a sports jacket, (choice of colour is yours), and a pair of chinos. Add a crisp plain or striped shirt and you’ve got yourself a winning combination.

The shirt

Above all, you’ll want a shirt that not only looks smart but that is comfortable and allows your skin to breathe. A day at Wimbledon can be very long, so comfort is key. Style wise, we suggest some of the following styles as they tend to complement and be versatile.

The accessories

As mentioned earlier, the two items not to be without are a panama hat and a pair of super stylish sunglasses. No one wants a burned head nor will you want to be squinting all day long. Oh, and make sure you apply sunscreen before you leave your house in the morning. Factor 50 is best so that it lasts all day.

If you are required to wear a tie, this is where you can really have some more fun. From plain, spot or texture, the choice is yours. Just make sure it fits with the rest of your look.

You may even want to add in a pocket square just for fun and to add a little more colour to your day.

Shoes

Above all, you’ll want to be comfortable all day long. Loafers and brogues are the best options and will pair well with the rest of your ensemble. Just make sure you’ve worn them prior to your day out, as there tends to be more walking than you realise

The casual look

Smart, beige chino shorts and a smart, striped shirt or even a linen shirt is highly acceptable. However, most do opt for a suit or separates option due to the unpredictable weather.

Colours

The colours worn at Wimbledon tend to be fairly conservative, ranging from blue to cream to beige. This doesn’t mean you have to do the same but it depends how brave you wish to be.

Top tips

Always choose fabrics with natural fabrics, they allow the skin to breathe. Shirts that say non-iron tend to be made up of polyesters and or viscose which can trap heat, meaning you’ll end up feeling uncomfortable and very hot.
