How to dress for Royal Ascot Alexandra Wood

Ascot – Home to the finest British horse racing event and the pinnacle of class and style, Ascot does hold strict dress codes but fear not, as we are here to guide you to sartorial excellence to perfect your look for this prestigious event in 2022.

While elegance and sophistication are the order of the day, that doesn’t mean you have to hide your personality completely. To help you pick a winner (on the fashion front, at least!), we offer you our guide to dressing for the most exciting event on the racing calendar. It’s helpfully broken down by each ‘enclosure’ for ease.

Ascot racecourse is a British racecourse located in Ascot, Berkshire and is one of the leading racecourses for thoroughbreds, lasting 5 days and hosts a total of 18 races. Ascot is an elite, annual social event, where those who attend do so for pleasure, business or simply for social reasons.

Whether you’re hosting a box, are a guest or are simply visiting one of the other fabulous enclosures, we ensure you’re impeccably dressed, with our simple, how to guide.

How to dress for the Royal Enclosure

This is the most prestigious, and most sartorially demanding enclosure. Gentlemen are required to wear black or grey morning dress with a contrasting waistcoat with a tie, black shoes, and a black or grey top hat.

We recommend a classic black herringbone coat, worn with a Prince Edward stripe trousers and a dove grey or sand waistcoat for a classic, yet understated look. Fancy waistcoats are also acceptable and can be a nice way to add your own touch. The usual style of trousers worn with morning dress has one pleat which makes for a roomier fit, however, if you wish to modernise, we advise opting for a flat fronted trouser.

Accessories such as tie’s and pocket square’s are where you can add your own personal stamp.

Do remember to keep your hat on outside, and remove it when indoors or in covered external enclosures. Helpful note: Royal Ascot does not allow customisation of hats with coloured ribbons or bands on the hats.

Queen Anne Enclosure & Village Enclosure:

These enclosures are still relatively formal and require a suit with shirt and tie. However, outside of the Royal Enclosure, you can wear almost any colours you like. Each year you will see trends of particular colours but there’s no defining rule here. tails, but really you can opt for any colour. Again, let your personality shine with your pocket square and tie rather than your suit.

A classic, three piece suit is accepted. A well cut, two-buttoned jacket is the most flattering and modern. Wear with your trousers slightly tapered.

Windsor Enclosure

There is no formal dress code for this enclosure but we’d still recommend maintaining a classic racing look with a suit, shirt, and tie. At the very least, smart trousers, shirt, and a blazer.

It goes without saying that exceptional grooming is required; whatever area you will be enjoying the races in. It’s a long, usually hot day so be prepared.

A word of caution, the Village Enclosure and Windsor Enclosure are both outdoors and are on grass, so do dress with the delightful British weather in mind. A smart umbrella is a great investment.
